Confessions of a Lucky #Webseries Creator (Community)

“Like a small town that got dropped on the entertainment industry,” is how I described the webseries community to someone remarking to me on the level of activity and the number of shows.

“Small town” because people don’t say hi to each other on the street in the big city.  I am quickly learning, as I launch my first webseries, they do say hi in this small town called the webseries community.

It’s not like what most in the entertainment industry do, they wait.

It’s about doing, and doing now, or damn close to it.  It’s about being judged on the end creative product, not potential, not possibility.  Creative Product.

The planets aligned and the perfect timing of what’s been in the works for well over a decade has arrived, bandwidth, viewing habits, distribution and cheap-ish gear and software.

Possibility is all there is and the rules haven’t even picked a font to be written in yet. The corporations, production companies, the consultants, the marketers, the brands, the advertising agencies, they’re all still figuring it out.  And so are we, the creators.

When I wrote for a Mondo Media webseries in 1999, everyone thought, “It’s never been like this before.”  In 2006 when I directed and produced on Superdeluxe.com webseries, everyone thought, “It’s never been like this before.”

Just like now.  It’s different this time, absolutely, but those who do not know history…

There’s still star-fucking, of course there is, just like there is everywhere else.  But the bottom-line, a big budget can make a shit product, they open on screens nationwide all the time.  Just like webseries do on small screens.  Yes, they’re not all good.  Sorry, that’s the truth.

One rule has always been true, put something on the internet and someone will hate it, sometimes with a passion.  I’m braced for my haters.  Doing stand up comedy I learned about haters, first hand, sometimes from a loud drunk person right in front of me.

I don’t know what happens next and to quote Willy Wonka (the first movie) “The suspense is killing me.  I hope it lasts.”

And to quote the late, great comedian Bill Hicks and his take on life, “It’s just a ride.”

Maybe that’s all this is, a fun, creative ride that will produce something that someone will enjoy, in the form of what is now called a webseries.  And in the big picture, maybe that should be enough.
